The Academy was started in 1955. It grew out of the first Republican educational institution for the advanced of educational specialists. In 1992 the Institute for the Advanced of Qualifications and the Retraining of Educational Administrators and Specialists was founded on the basis of the establishment. In 1997 it was transformed into the Academy of Postdiploma Education.

The main directions of the Academy's activity are improving qualification and retraining specialists of education, training postgraduates and Master of Arts in different spheres, scientific research in pedagogics, curriculum-development work, coordination of work of In-service Teacher Training Institutes in the Republic of Belarus.

In the Academy the following specialities are introduced. They are management of education, technologies in education, upbringing and out-of school activities, pre-school education, psychology, learning difficulties, information technology, cultural studies, philology and others.

The Academy has 6 faculties, 8 departments, 2 centers, 4 administrative departments, 13 sections, post-graduate and Master of Arts studies, publication unit, library, hostel. Annually the Academy holds more than 200 courses and 100 seminars, 6000 teachers attend a range of various short courses and have their retraining here. At present the Academy numbers 98 teaching staff including 12 full Professors, 38 associate professors and doctors.

From 1997 the Academy is the largest state educational, scientific and research in pedagogics information analytic and coordinating center in Improving Qualification and Retraining Educational Administration and Specialists.

The activity of the Academy is carried out in the frames of the renewed national system of education, reforms of secondary school and in accordance with the documents on perspective development of the Academy itself as the institution of postdiploma education.
